Start/Finish: VISP
Country: SWITZERLAND
Route: Loop
CLIMB: MOOSALP (2049M)
ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CLIMBS IN VALAIS
This loop starts in the Rhône valley and takes you up to Moosalp, one of the most beautiful climbs in the Swiss canton of Valais. I introduced it to Sander Kolsloot from cyclingdestination.cc and his buddy Ruben Hoogland.
Starting from Visp station, you follow SwitzerlandMobility's Route du Rhône until Turtmann, with a variation between Raron and Gampel to avoid a gravel section.

On the SwitzerlandMobility route towards Turtmann
After this 20km warm-up, things immediately get tougher with 4 hairpin bends where the gradient fluctuates between 7 and 10%. After that, things calm down and you climb a gentler slope with beautiful views over the valley as you head towards Bürchen (km 15).

On the first part of the climb
This is where the final part of the climb to Moosalp begins. The gradients rise again, but you'll be amazed by the magnificent scenery if you manage to look away from your stem. After 24km of climbing, you finally reach Moosalp.

Almost at the top
Take a break and refuel - there's even a restaurant listed in the Gault&Millau guide! And get ready for the descent: 16km of fun to Stalden, with fabulous views of the region's 4,000-meter peaks and typical Upper Valais hamlets.
To get back to Visp, you can avoid the main road by staying on the left bank of the Vispa. The road is asphalted until km 43, where you have to ride on the main road for the last few kilometers.

The descent is even more spectacular than the climb

TIPS
- 25 climbs are signposted for cyclists in the canton of Valais. At the start and end of each one, you'll find an information panel with a map, key figures (length, gradient) and suggestions for nearby routes. Along the way, markers indicate altitude, distance to the finish and the percentage, length and gradient of the next section. More info here.
- At Moosalp, enjoy a local specialty at one of the restaurants. Our recommendation: Älplermagronen, the Swiss and much tastier version of Mac and Cheese
